The previous first-quarter record was 2,182 candidates in 2018, propelled by a protest movement against President Trump. With 1,221 candidates or 56% of the roster, Democrats swept the House. Tom Emmer (R-MN), chairman of the National Republican Congressional Committee, told the Washington Examiner. “That’s what I’m projecting.”
